What is WebP and why should I use it?
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that delivers superior lossy and lossless compression for the web. It typically produces files 25-35% smaller than JPEG and up to 26% smaller than PNG at equivalent quality, which means faster page loads, lower bandwidth costs, better Core Web Vitals (LCP/INP), and a measurable lift for SEO and conversion rates.
How do I convert PNG or JPG to WebP online?
Drag and drop your PNG, JPG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, AVIF, SVG, ICO, or TIFF files into the upload area, or paste direct image URLs in the URL tab. Choose a quality level (80-90% is ideal for web use) or enable Lossless mode for icons and graphics, then click Convert to WebP. You can also enter a website URL and the tool will automatically discover non-WebP images on that page.
Is WebP supported in all modern browsers?
Yes. WebP is supported by Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (14+), Opera, and all major mobile browsers, covering more than 96% of global users. For older browsers, serve a JPEG or PNG fallback using the HTML <picture> element with multiple <source> tags so each visitor automatically gets the best supported format.
Does WebP support transparency and animation?
Yes. WebP supports both alpha-channel transparency (a strong PNG replacement) and animation (a strong replacement for animated GIFs, often 60-80% smaller). This converter preserves transparency for static images. For animated GIF to animated WebP, use our dedicated GIF tools.
Will converting to WebP reduce image quality?
Lossy WebP at 80-90% quality is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos and screenshots while producing far smaller files. If you need pixel-perfect output for logos, UI assets, or screenshots with text, switch on Lossless mode and the tool will keep every pixel intact.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All conversion runs 100% client-side in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device, are never uploaded to AppKiro, and are never stored anywhere. This keeps your work private and complies with strict data-handling policies for confidential designs, mockups, and customer assets.
What is the maximum file size and batch size supported?
You can convert up to 36 images per batch. Per-file size is limited only by your browser memory; most modern browsers comfortably handle individual images up to about 50 MB. For very large source images (high-resolution photography or print-quality scans), processing happens in your local memory, so performance scales with your device.
How do I batch convert multiple images to WebP at once?
Select up to 36 files at the same time in the upload area, or paste up to 36 image URLs (one per line, or comma separated) in the URL tab. Each image is converted with the same quality settings, listed individually with size savings, and can be downloaded one by one or as a single ZIP archive. Optionally, push the entire batch to Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, or your own upload API directly from the browser.
Why do I see three WebP variants when I upload one image?
When you convert a single image, the tool produces a primary WebP using the Quality slider (or Lossless) you selected, plus three additional reference variants at 100%, 90%, and 70% quality so you can compare visual fidelity against file size at a glance. The slider still controls your primary output; the three extras are added for comparison only and are skipped automatically if they would duplicate the slider value. Each entry lists its own size, savings percentage, and Compare Before/After slider, making it easy to pick the smallest file that still looks great.
