How do I add a logo watermark to a video?

Choose a transparent logo when available, place it away from important content, reduce opacity enough to avoid distraction, preview it across the timeline and export a separate marked video.

A burned-in watermark remains visible in the exported picture

A video watermark is text or a logo rendered into the video frames to identify a brand, owner or review status. It is different from metadata because viewers can see it, and different from DRM because it does not technically control access or copying.

Who uses video watermarks?

Brands, agencies, photographers, editors and review teams use watermarks on previews, client proofs, social clips, internal drafts and licensed media that needs visible attribution.

When a watermark is useful

  • Place a logo on branded social or product videos.
  • Label a client proof as draft or preview.
  • Add a visible copyright or ownership notice.
  • Identify the source account on redistributed clips.
  • Mark internal review footage with project or status text.

How to watermark a video

  1. Choose the video and confirm its frame size and duration.

  2. Select text or image; use a transparent logo file when possible.

  3. Choose a corner or another low-conflict area, then adjust size, offsets, opacity and rotation.

  4. Decide whether the mark should remain for the entire video or only a selected range.

  5. Preview multiple scenes, render the new file and verify that the mark is visible without covering essential content.

Watermark settings explained

Transparent logo image

PNG or WebP with alpha keeps an irregular logo edge clean. A JPEG has no alpha channel and normally appears with a rectangular background.

Position and safe area

A corner is common, but the right location depends on captions, faces and platform UI. Use offsets and the safe-area guide rather than assuming one corner always works.

Size

Large marks are harder to crop out but can obstruct the video. Small marks are less distracting but may disappear after downscaling.

Opacity

Lower opacity blends with the picture; too low becomes ineffective. Test both bright and dark scenes because contrast changes.

Duration

Use the full video for persistent attribution. A custom range is appropriate for a temporary review label or segment-specific notice.

Watermark, overlay, metadata and DRM are different

A watermark is visible brand or ownership identification. An overlay is broader visual information. Metadata stores hidden descriptive fields. DRM is an access-control system. Do not present a visible watermark as copy protection or guaranteed misuse prevention.

How watermarking is processed

When verified in source code, local video and logo assets are composited and encoded in the browser. URL sources still use the network and can be blocked by CORS or authorization. The original file should remain unchanged and a separate marked copy should be created.

Watermark limitations

  • A visible watermark can discourage casual reuse but cannot guarantee prevention of copying or removal.
  • Burned-in marks cannot be turned off after export.
  • A fixed mark does not follow a moving object unless tracking is implemented.
  • Re-encoding can change visual quality, file size and metadata.

Common watermark problems

The logo has a box around it

Use a transparent PNG or WebP instead of JPEG, and verify that the source image actually contains alpha transparency.

The mark disappears on some scenes

Increase opacity, add a subtle background or outline, or move it to an area with more stable contrast.

The mark covers captions or faces

Use a different preset, reduce size or adjust X/Y offsets after reviewing the entire timeline.

The logo looks pixelated

Start with a larger source logo and scale down; do not enlarge a small raster asset beyond its native detail.

Video watermark FAQ

Should I use text or a logo image?

Use text for a quick name, URL or draft label. Use an image for consistent brand artwork, especially when a transparent logo asset is available.

Which image format is best for a logo watermark?

Transparent PNG is a practical default. WebP with alpha can also work when supported. JPEG cannot store transparency.

What opacity should I use?

There is no universal value. Choose the lowest opacity that stays identifiable across both bright and dark scenes without hiding important content.

Can the watermark appear only for part of the video?

Yes when the custom time-range control is supported. Set start and end within the source duration.

Can a watermark prevent people from copying the video?

No. It provides visible attribution or deterrence, not technical access control. It can still be cropped, covered or edited.

Is a watermark stored as metadata?

Not when it is burned into frames. It becomes visible pixel content. Metadata is separate information inside the file container.

Can I remove the watermark later?

Not cleanly from the exported copy because it is part of the image. Keep the unwatermarked original as the editable master.

Does watermarking reduce quality?

The compositing itself can be precise, but video export may require a lossy re-encode. Quality depends on the actual codec, bitrate and processing path.
